Amalgam seekers

So I had my first fillings this morning. Boo. I hated it. It is weird. There was no pain but the vibration and the anticipation that they would hit something was horrible. The dentist is ever so nice though. One more go then I am done. I bought a copy of Watership down and a collection of Ted Hughes poems in the second hand bookstore on my way home. I actually feel like crying now weirdly. But no, must do revision. My concentration is shit at the moment and I am fed up of exams.

On the way I heard on the radio there is call to change the term 'asylum seeking' to 'sanctuary seeker' because apparently the public don't' understand what asylum seeker means. Dude, people may not understand the concept of an asylum seeker - but that's not because of the word, its because we are constantly told 'they're all coming over here nicking our jobs' and are responsible for a gazillion percent of the crime in the country. The problem is with attitudes towards immigration not towards the word asylum. The survey this has come off sounds like the sort of thing which epitomises the problems with surveys. You ask the question with the answer in mind - Do you think the word asylum has negative connotations - well duh what are people going to say?

This has absolutely nothing to do with the issue that the legitimacy of a persons claim to need 'asylum' or 'sanctuary' is usually doubted and that it is often felt there needs to be a 'good reason' to be able to come and live here. Like all those Brits have great reasons to move to Spain or Australia.

I have been self medicating with: Numb gums!
